Interview with Oshkosh Corporation: Testing and Simulation for AVs in different landscapes

Ahead of the online Scale Up 360° Tech.AD USA conference, we asked Brendan Chan, Chief Engineer-Unmanned Systems at Oshkosh Corporation, some questions about challenges and future trend in automotive, as well as the impact of 5G technologies in the industry.

we.CONECT: What technical challenge fascinates you most about autonomous driving?

Autonomous Driving is an exciting field with many applications. I have always been fascinated with the growth of application of deep learning and look forward to tackling each challenge in this area.

we.CONECT: What do you consider the most important breakthrough in fully autonomous vehicle development in the next five years?

I think the reduction in hardware cost, coupled with the exponential growth in perception software will drive a lot of breakthroughs in this area within the next few years.

we.CONECT: Where do you see the biggest opportunities in the application of AI, machine, deep & reinforcement learning in the development of fully autonomous vehicles?

I envision that developments in unsupervised learning will unlock a lot of opportunities in our journey towards full automation.

we.CONECT: What possibilities brings the development of 5G connectivity for the autonomous driving industry?

A lot. OTA updates is a must and 5G is strong enabler.

we.CONECT: When do you think we will see level 5 autonomous vehicles / cars deployed massively on the road in the US and possibly overtake the deployment of conventional vehicles?

I think we will see SAE L5 vehicles trickling in within the next decade. Deployment growth is strongly influenced by regulatory and societal acceptance and I think we will see a proliferation of the vehicles when those two criteria are met.

we.CONECT: Please explain in brief the key aspects of your session at the ScaleUp 360° Tech.AD USA 2020

We will talk about how simulation is a strong enabler for autonomous development. Various factors will be discussed and hopefully that will give everyone some idea of what is necessary for a strong simulation framework.

we.CONECT: What was your first car and how would your dream car of the future look like?

My first car was a 1978 Mitsubishi Galant. In the future, I wish for an autonomous capable version of the McLaren MP4-12C so that i can have the best of both worlds!

we.CONECT: Thank you Brendan Chan for answering our questions!
